Clocks

There are many different types of clocks that can be found in the world today. Each of them has the ability to show what time it truly is, and keep that time so that a person might know it whenever they choose. However, not all clocks are the same. There are several different types of clocks that are important to understand.

Grandfather Clocks

Grandfather clocks are the largest types of clocks that might be seen in a person’s home. These are large, free standing clocks, and are used to keep time. Most of the time, it is possible to see the clock keeping time through the glass door in the front. Most of the time, Grandfather clocks are much taller than the average person. They display the time on the top of the clock, and often have a deep-sounded noise to accompany the changing of the hour.

Mantel Clocks

Mantel clocks have been around for many years. They are decorative clocks that traditionally sat on the mantel pieces in a person’s home. They are clocks that are decorative but are also useful, as they keep time. Many times mantel clocks are quite distinguished looking and beautiful.

Cuckoo Clocks

Cuckoo Clocks come from Europe, and they are clocks that mark the passing of the hour with a bird or another animal that pops out of a door at the top of the clock. These clocks where once seen as novelties, but are very useful as they do keep excellent time. They are also usually found to be highly cultural items, as cultures all over the world have different versions of their own cuckoo clocks. These clocks are smaller than both mantel clocks and grandfather clocks, and are usually hung on a wall. They have tassels which hang down to mark the time as the time passes.

Alarm Clocks

Alarm clocks are most traditionally seen in a person’s bedroom, but can be seen in any area of the house or workplace. They are clocks that have an alarm function. A person can set the time of the alarm on the clock, and when the clock reaches that time an alarm will sound. These clocks are most often used for waking people up in the morning. They can be wind up alarm clocks, battery operated alarm clocks, or plug-in alarm clocks. Newer versions also have clock radios that can be set as well.

Black Forest Cuckoo Clocks — What You Need to Know

Posted on September 2nd, 2010 in Cuckoo Clocks by cuckooclocks  Tagged , ,

The German Black Forest has a rich cuckoo clock heritage.

For nearly 300 years, Black Forest Germany has been renowned for producing quality, hand carved cuckoo clocks. When considering purchasing such a fine piece of artistry today, discover the importance of knowing just who the maker of your clock is.

Know your clock maker.

You will want to know with surety who actually produced the cuckoo clock you’re admiring, even when visiting the Black Forest region in person. Appearances are often deceiving. Just because you are buying from a quaint little German clock shop and are told their products are hand crafted at the nearby family workshop, that doesn’t make it so. If you see their workshop with craftsmen hard at work…well you most likely can take them at their word. Otherwise, buyers beware.

Whether shopping online or within the Black Forest itself, in most cases you won’t find the name of the clock maker anywhere on the clock, making its true source and identity utterly untraceable.

Are they hiding something?

There just aren’t many family owned clock making businesses left in the German Black Forest region today. Much of the appeal of owning a German Black Forest cuckoo clock is the nostalgia and tradition behind the craft. Picture a snowbound cabin in the middle of a mountain forest; within, see the woodcarver hard at his trade waiting for spring to arrive. This is the bygone scene of an authentic Black Forest cuckoo clock. While most all cuckoo clocks are German, still of those, many are made to appear as something they are not. They are not made by the snowbound woodsman as they once were.

If truly an authentic Black Forest cuckoo clock, why isn’t the name of the artisan anywhere to be found on the clock?

Identifying the manufacturer on the piece would ruin the shopkeeper’s illusion of being an independent craftsman, thereby decreasing value appeal to tourists visiting Germany. Most manufacturers agree to leave their identifiers off their products to help German shopkeepers maintain this illusion.

Understandably, what small clock dealer wouldn’t want to be associated with such a rich heritage as this? Perhaps they’ll just “borrow” the image from days gone by and apply it to themselves. They’ll offer you a certificate stating it is “Authentic Black Forest,” which it is, but you’ll still need to pose the question, “Who made it?”

What happens 5, maybe 10 years down the road when you don’t have a store receipt OR a certificate of authenticity any longer? It will be next to impossible to Identify the manufacturer years after your purchase. You may need to service your clock, but you have no way of knowing where it actually came from.

There is but only one exception to this.

So who can be trusted?

Schneider Cuckoo Clocks is a company that stands alone within the cuckoo clock industry; a clock maker of true Black Forest heritage. In 1848 Anton Schneider began building cuckoo clocks out of his farmhouse in Schonach, Germany and the family business he founded is now in its 6th generation.

In spite of the many innovations within manufacturing over the past 100 years, the old tradition of hand carving is still maintained at Schneider. A love for detail combined with ancient handicraft skills even today are the characteristics of the new generation Schneider cuckoo clock.

After 160 years, Schneider is the oldest German clock company and the only cuckoo clock maker that identifies their name with their product. You’ll find the Schneider name prominently displayed on the dial of every clock, with serial number stamped on the back. The serial number itself tells the story of your clock; i.e., when it was made, its features and the type of movement it has inside.

This is all part of the Schneider advantage. When you’ve lost all documentation of the sale, you can still always just recite your serial number to any Schneider service person around the world and they will know exactly what your clock needs. This is impossible with anyone else but Schneider.

When you consider the rich heritage of the cuckoo clock–if it’s a “Black Forest” clock that interests you–truly the only verifiable clock maker today is Schneider.

Whether visiting the Black Forest region of Germany, or just shopping online, be sure to shop for a verifiable Schneider Cuckoo Clock. Peace of mind comes in knowing you have an authentic article and that you can always find help no matter how long ago your clock was purchased.

A Variety of Clocks As Collectibles

Posted on August 30th, 2010 in Cuckoo Clocks by cuckooclocks  Tagged , ,

Clocks are instruments that are used to measure, indicate, and keep time and they are also collectibles for collectors all over the world. A variety of clocks are available for collecting, which include cuckoo clocks, alarm clocks, mantel clocks, musical clocks, and so many more that collectors are focusing their collections on.

One of the earliest inventions of man was a type of primitive clock known as a sundial and the water clock. Through the years clocks have become invaluable to man, as they have even helped in navigation during the exploration, which began during the fifteenth century. Precise navigation does require knowing exactly what time it is, and probably pushed the development of even more accurate clocks.

Normally, clocks are categorized by the different types of mechanisms that they use in which to measure the passing of time, but they can also be categorized by the variety of displays that are used to tell the current time. Typically there are mechanical analogue clocks that show hours, minutes, and seconds on their faces. There are also digital clocks that do not have any moving parts, but are either LCD or LED and have numeric displays for showing the time.

Some of the analogue clocks like grandfather clocks and cuckoo clocks use pendulums, while others keep time with the use of one or more springs. Throughout history, mechanical clocks use a variety of different mechanisms to show the current time with many of them having striking mechanisms like gongs, bells, or chimes, which lets you know the passing of hours, half hours, and some times quarter hours. Of course, there are some mechanical clocks that are silent and are referred to as timepieces instead of clocks. There are some clocks that have no clock working parts at all and they are able to measure time simply by using tiny movements of quartz crystals or vibrations of a tuning fork. These non mechanical clocks have either a digital display or a few may even have an analogue display.

Collectors have a variety of styles, shapes, and sizes of clocks available to base their clock collections on, which include wood, metal, and plastic. There are some other more hard durable materials that are used and these clocks are available in a variety of designs that will go with just about any decor. Today there are clocks being made that are highly decorative and older clocks have a type of distinction that newer clocks lack, but what ever type of clock the collector is basing their collection on they can range in a variety of prices and styles.

Collectors all over the world have fallen in love with Cuckoo Clocks and that is why they have become the most popular of all clocks for collectors. In fact, collectors have found that Cuckoo Clocks not only keep accurate time, but they will also entertain them at the stroke of each hour, half hour, and quarter hour. Typically, the design of Cuckoo Clocks look like wooden chalets or ski lodges hanging on the walls, which are normally made of wood and are decorated with carved leaves, flowers, and animals. Most Cuckoo Clocks will feature a carved cuckoo bird that will pop out through a tiny double door when even the clock begins striking at the top of the hour, and when the cuckoo bird appears the sound of cuckoo will be heard, which mimics the call of a real cuckoo bird.

The Cuckoo Clock Chirps Five

Posted on August 26th, 2010 in Cuckoo Clocks by cuckooclocks  Tagged ,

This is the cuckoo clock that I have hung up in my office. It chirps every hour on the hour. Here is a video of it chirping 5 times (actually 10 times because each chirp is accompanied by an echo), telling us that it’s 5pm. That means it is time to say balek kampung, sayonara, adios amigos, auf wiedersehen, ayam kambing home, etc etc.
